Gary Hoag

Generosity Monk

Gary received his Ph.D. in New Testament from Trinity College, Bristol, UK. His expertise centers around what the Bible teaches on the handling of money, so he serves as a visiting professor at seven seminaries in four countries. He is a passionate follower of Jesus and an ordained minister who grew up in a faith-based family business. He first studied accounting then felt led to use his business skills in ministry settings. He has held administrative roles at Biola University, Colorado Christian University, and Denver Seminary.

Presently, he is known globally as the Generosity Monk as he has dedicated his life to encouraging Christian generosity. He provides spiritual and strategic counsel for nonprofits and denominations and nonprofits for nurturing generosity in constituencies and congregations. He also champions faithful governance and administration globally as International Liaison for ECFA and has helped establish ECFA-type organizations in seven countries (South Korea, Philippines, Australia, Kenya, Guatemala, India, and Egypt).

He has written or contributed to ten books, including three from ECFA Press, The Council: A Biblical Perspective on Board Governance (2018), The Choice: The Christ-Centered Pursuit of Kingdom Outcomes (2014), and The Sower: Redefining the Ministry of Raising Kingdom Resources (2010). His popular book for individuals and groups is Good and Faithful: Ten Stewardship Lessons for Everyday Living (2017).

Life:

His wife is Jenni. They live in Littleton, Colorado, and have a grown son, Sammy and a grown daughter, Sophie.

  • When Gary is home (as he travels about 180 nights a year), He and his wife, Jenni, take twice daily walks with their German Shorthair Pointer, Joy St. Clare.

  • Gary and his son, Sammy, love fly fishing. They have caught and released 34 of 60 types of trout in North America. Find their trout videos at www.sammysflyshop.com.

  • He and his daughter, Sophie love coffee. For more than a decade they have enjoyed coffee dates all over the world.
